Archipelago International, Southeast Asia’s largest hotel management company, has launched a collaboration with local micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) in 29 of its hotels across Indonesia. This initiative aims to support the local economy and introduce guests to the rich cultural diversity of the archipelago. The program includes hotels located in regions such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and East Nusa Tenggara. Through this partnership, hotels feature a wide range of region-specific UMKM products including local snacks, traditional woven fabrics, eco-friendly recycled items, leather goods, and other handmade crafts. These items are displayed in strategic areas like hotel lobbies and minibars, providing guests with easy access to authentic, local-made products that reflect the cultural identity of each area.
John Flood, CEO of Archipelago International, emphasized that the company’s hotels serve not just as places to stay but also as platforms for cultural exchange and economic empowerment. By showcasing local products, the hotels help UMKM gain valuable exposure and access to broader markets, especially among domestic and international tourists. This strategy is expected to enhance guest experiences by offering more than just hospitality—it also offers insight into the local lifestyle and traditions. The initiative supports the government's efforts to boost the creative economy, promote sustainability, and preserve Indonesia’s cultural heritage. In addition to strengthening the tourism sector, the collaboration aims to encourage guests to appreciate and purchase locally made goods, ultimately contributing to the long-term development of small businesses. With continued support from both the hospitality industry and the community, this collaboration hopes to inspire similar partnerships nationwide, making tourism a stronger driver of inclusive economic growth. The program reflects a growing trend in sustainable tourism, where commercial success is aligned with cultural appreciation and local empowerment.
