Padang City’s MSMEs Reach 47,692 Units, Generating IDR 952 Billion in Revenue by 2024

Over the past three years, the city of Padang has seen a remarkable surge in its micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM/ MSMEs). As of 2024, the number of registered businesses under the city's Cooperative and SME Office reached 47,692, up from 42,282 in 2023 and 39,924 in 2022. These UMKM collectively generated revenues of around IDR 952.1 billion in 2024, a sharp increase from the IDR 746.1 billion reported in the previous year. The rise reflects not only entrepreneurial drive but also systematic efforts by local authorities, such as issuing 10,196 Business Identification Numbers (NIB), a big jump from 2,860 in 2023, and emphasizing digital adoption to boost competitiveness in broader markets.

In 2024, significant strides were made in enhancing UMKM quality and legitimacy: halal certification soared from just 168 products in 2022 to 1,636 in 2024, while training programs expanded dramatically from serving 120 businesses in 2023 to 861 in 2024. The city also nurtured 3,219 new entrepreneurs during the year, reflecting a coordinated strategy to grow the economic base and tackle unemployment. Officials highlighted that these developments form part of a broader vision to cultivate an ecosystem where quantity and quality go hand in hand, supported by digitalisation, legal compliance, certifications, and capacity-building, ensuring sustainable growth for Padang’s MSMEs sector.
