The Regional-Owned Enterprise (BUMD) PT Sarana Pembangunan Jawa Tengah (SPJT) officially began operating its industrial salt factory in June 2025. Located on a 2.5-hectare site in Raci Village, Batangan District, Pati Regency, the factory has a production capacity of 25,000 tons per year and is capable of absorbing up to 30,000 tons of salt from local farmers. As the second-largest salt-producing region in Indonesia after Madura, Pati generates around 150,000 tons of salt annually. However, much of this output has not met the industrial standard of 97% sodium chloride (NaCl), which is essential for industries such as animal feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. This factory aims to improve the quality and value of local salt through downstream processing, aligning with national industrial needs.
The initiative is also expected to stabilize salt prices at the farmer level and reduce reliance on imports, as national demand reaches 4.9 million tons annually, while current domestic production stands at only 2.04 million tons. The factory uses environmentally friendly compressed natural gas (CNG), supplied by PT Jateng Petro Energi (JPEN), and has partnered with 21 companies whose combined salt needs reach 1,500 tons per month. Local farmer Joko Senawi from Batangan expressed his satisfaction with the factory's presence, citing ease of selling and price stability at Rp1,600 per kilogram. With a NaCl content of 94%, he can produce up to 130 tons of salt during the six-month dry season.
