Indonesian Embassy Backs Entry of Local Spices into Egyptian Supermarkets

The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo is supporting efforts to expand the reach of Indonesian food products, especially seasonings and spices, into Egypt’s growing retail market. During a meeting with Egyptian food and beverage company Tredco Passap, Trade Attaché M. Syahran Bhakti expressed optimism about the potential for Indonesian products to enter major supermarket chains such as Fathallah Market, which has 95 branches across Egypt. This initiative aims not only to introduce Indonesia’s rich culinary offerings to Egyptian consumers but also to promote products from Indonesian SMEs. According to Abdul Gafur, Economic Coordinator at the Embassy, the collaboration will also benefit the Indonesian diaspora in Egypt—currently around 20,000 people, by improving access to familiar food items and encouraging joint marketing efforts.

The Embassy noted a steady increase in Indonesia's food-related exports to Egypt. From January to April 2025, trade between the two countries reached USD 690 million, up 45.53% from the same period in 2024. Indonesian exports to Egypt rose by 33.60% to USD 545 million. Significant growth was recorded in key categories: coconut and nuts surged by 259%, seasonings rose by 33%, frozen fish increased by 126%, and exports of nutmeg and cardamom jumped nearly tenfold. One of the first steps in this collaboration includes plans by Tredco to import a container of Mamasuka-branded spices. The Embassy sees this as a gateway for broader product entry, helping Indonesian businesses thrive in international markets.
