Upstream Oil and Gas Industry Contributes IDR 5,045 Trillion, Supports Clean Energy Transition

The upstream oil and gas sector continues to play a vital role in Indonesia’s economy, having contributed IDR 5,045 trillion in non-tax state revenue (PNBP) over the past 22 years, making it the second-largest contributor to state income after taxation. This milestone was shared by Hudi D. Suryodipuro, Head of Communications at SKK Migas, during a 2025 media gathering in Makassar. Highlighting its evolving direction, the industry now prioritizes domestic gas usage, with 70% of production allocated locally to strengthen national energy security. Promising new reserves, especially in the Andaman region, are expected to become key to future energy supply.

Beyond fiscal contributions, the sector drives economic activity through infrastructure development and drilling projects, generating significant multiplier effects. As Indonesia aims for ambitious 8% economic growth amid a sluggish global economy and targets net zero emissions, natural gas is being positioned as a vital transitional energy source. Hudi emphasized the urgency of accelerating new projects to meet future energy demands. He also acknowledged the media’s essential role in shaping public perception and maintaining accurate narratives about the industry. Through collaboration with the press, especially in Eastern Indonesia, SKK Migas hopes to continue fostering public understanding and support for the country's energy journey.
