The Mataram City Government has unveiled its 2025–2030 mid-term development plan, aiming to establish Mataram as a center for tourism and the creative economy. Acting Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency, H. Muhammad Ramadhani, stated that this vision will be refined through focused discussions to ensure strategic direction. Acknowledging that Mataram cannot compete directly with top destinations like Mandalika or the Gili Islands, Ramadhani emphasized that Mataram should serve as a supporting hub that leverages its role as the provincial capital.
Rather than competing, Mataram will complement tourism in other regions by focusing on unique strengths such as cultural and shopping tourism. For example, while Ampenan Beach may not rival Kuta Beach, it holds its own charm and potential. The city will seek to attract tourists for longer stays, encouraging them to shop, experience local culture, and engage with the community. Integrating tourism with the creative economy, particularly through local MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises), will provide added value and increase employment opportunities. The city’s strategy avoids competing with major tourism zones and instead focuses on carving a niche that supports sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
