Biak Numfor's Department of Marine and Fisheries supports the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries' "Red and White Fishermen Village" (KNMP) initiative, aimed at improving the coastal economy by developing 1,100 modern fishing villages across Indonesia by 2027. The program focuses on transforming traditional coastal villages into integrated, productive aquaculture hubs. Biak Numfor hopes to be included in the program, replicating the success of Kalamo Samber-Binyeri, a modern pilot village developed since 2023 with full facilities including cold storage, a fishermen’s dock, fuel stations, and workshops.
Kalamo Samber-Binyeri has become a national model for KNMP implementation, showcasing how cooperatives can support local fishing communities. The KNMP program is expected to enhance competitiveness in fishery products and strengthen coastal livelihoods. As of now, Biak Numfor is awaiting confirmation from the Ministry to implement the KNMP locally. Nationally, the program is projected to require a budget of IDR 24.2 trillion, to be deployed gradually through 2027.
