Exports from Jayapura to Papua New Guinea (PNG) through the Skouw Border Post reached IDR 25.17 billion between January and May 2025, marking a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This significant growth is attributed to increased awareness and promotion efforts by government agencies and stakeholders, along with improved export procedures. The implementation of the online CEISA customs system has further streamlined the process, making it easier for local businesses to engage in cross-border trade. Key exported goods include processed foods, furniture, vehicle spare parts, household equipment, construction materials, and electronic products. Officials also noted growing interest in expanding exports to include motor vehicles and agricultural machinery, as demand from PNG remains strong.
The positive trend highlights the strategic importance of the Skouw Border Post in facilitating international trade in eastern Indonesia. Indonesian Consul in Vanimo, PNG, Alex Tangkuman, praised the continued outreach and simplified customs services, which have helped boost business confidence. While exports are flourishing, imports from PNG remain modest—about 10% of the export value, totaling around IDR 2.5 billion. Imported goods mainly consist of dried vanilla, masohi bark, and processed meat. With growing infrastructure and smoother regulations, Jayapura is increasingly positioning itself as a vital trade hub in the region, offering promising opportunities for economic development and stronger bilateral relations with neighboring PNG.
