BKPM Increases Investment in Advanced Copper Products with Added Value

The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) stated that it is trying to increase downstream investment in the copper sector that produces advanced products, because they have high added value. Director of Downstream Minerals and Coal (Minerba) BKPM Rizwan Aryadi Ramdhan, explained that currently the development of copper downstreaming in the country is still limited to tier one, such as that carried out by PT. Freeport Indonesia which has only produced copper cathodes. "Not yet to other derivatives, copper foil, copper slab, and others. Until the products that are applied in everyday life, the added value is even higher," he also said. "That's what we want to pursue, like in Freeport. So we want the next tier to be its derivatives, which indeed there are still not many business actors," he said again.

According to him, so far the results of tier one downstreaming are usually exported, even though the copper products that are made can produce verified applicative goods that have high selling value. However, until now, these products have been widely used by other countries which ultimately makes Indonesia a destination for importing advanced tier copper products. "For example, to China or maybe other countries to process the added value there. After it is ready to be used in the downstream industry or the applicable product, it is then imported back to Indonesia. That is the added value that is large abroad. We are just a market again," he said. He added that to attract investment interest in the country, his party has prepared various programs, such as tax holidays, tax allowances, and actively conducting promotions abroad. In the first quarter of 2025, BKPM recorded investment realization in that period reaching IDR 465.2 trillion or 24.4% of the total investment this year. This figure increased by 15.9 percent from last year (year on year), and increased by 2.7% from the previous quarter. From this investment, it is divided into foreign investment (PMA) of 49.5% or IDR 230.4 trillion, and domestic investment (PMDN) recorded at 49.3% or IDR 229.3 trillion.
