The Sumbawa Regency Government will conduct its first export of corn commodities to the Philippines, amounting to 6,000 tons from the quota given of around 20,000 tons. "We will conduct this first export on June 17 through the Badas port and we will also make maximum efforts to meet the quota set by the government," said Sumbawa Regent, Ir. H. Syarafuddin Jarot, yesterday. Haji Jarot said that normal corn production is around 1.7 million tons and rice 1.6 million tons. This is not directly proportional to the capacity in Bulog and partner warehouses of around 500 thousand tons for the two commodities. "We still lack warehouses to accommodate the production results for these commodities of 2,200 thousand tons and that figure is large enough to support the food self-sufficiency program," he said.
The limited number of warehouses makes the circulation of the two leading commodities slightly constrained. If the circulation is normal between transportation to the factory and exports, the warehouse shortage can be reduced to 500 thousand tons. "We are very grateful for the construction of three warehouses in Sumbawa so that we can maximize the absorption of superior commodities," he said. Haji Jarot said that until May 2025, Sumbawa's corn production will reach 267,460 tons from a harvest area of 60,270 hectares. This figure is predicted to continue to increase until the end of the year along with supportive climate conditions. "In 2024, corn production will be 715,641 tons, making Sumbawa the largest corn center in NTB and one of the main players in national corn exports," he said. In addition to corn, rice commodities also show brilliant performance. In 2024, Sumbawa's rice production will reach 325,860 tons from 57,754 hectares of harvest area, with a consistent rice surplus every year. "We hope that the presence of this warehouse will be a solution to the long-standing challenge, namely the limited storage of harvest results so that food distribution and supply will be more efficient and stable," he said.
