The Ministry of Trade and SMBC Collaborate to Boost Exports to the Japanese Market

The Indonesian Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) has partnered with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to enhance Indonesia’s exports across strategic sectors, including high-quality and sustainable products. During a meeting in Tokyo on June 9 with SMBC executives Tomohiro Suzuki and Tetsuya Kainaka, Director General of National Export Development Fajarini Puntodewi emphasized the focus on boosting exports of renewable energy products such as palm kernel shells and wood pellets, which are increasingly in demand in Japan’s green energy transition. She also noted plans to increase exports of agricultural and fishery products, particularly tuna and other seafood, supported by SMBC’s logistical and distribution network.

This collaboration positions Japan as a vital strategic market amid global uncertainty, including U.S. tariff policies that impact Indonesian exports. SMBC expressed strong commitment to helping Indonesian exports grow by leveraging its network of over 400,000 client companies in Japan. The bank will offer financing, market access, business matchmaking, and training programs to help Indonesian MSMEs expand into the Japanese market. Both parties aim to foster inclusive and resilient export growth while strengthening bilateral economic ties.
