The Indonesian government is fast-tracking the development of a robust national medical device industry, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision for strategic sector self-reliance. Backed by the Ministry of Industry, this initiative seeks to build a globally competitive and technologically advanced medical equipment ecosystem—from upstream production to downstream distribution. According to Setia Diarta, Director General of ILMATE, the initiative aims to reduce dependency on imports, stimulate domestic manufacturing, attract investments, and create new jobs. The plan is part of the broader "Making Indonesia 4.0" roadmap, which focuses on innovation, digital integration, and supply chain efficiency.
To achieve these goals, the ministry is reforming the calculation and certification process for the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) to enhance local content use. Emphasis is also being placed on prioritizing local products in the government’s e-Catalog procurement system, with support from the Ministry of Health and LKPP. The share of local products in the health sector catalog rose significantly from 8% in 2019 to 48% in 2024. Indonesia’s medical devices—such as hospital furniture, syringes, and diagnostic tools—have begun penetrating ASEAN and Middle Eastern markets, signaling growing export potential. Through strong collaboration and policy reform, Indonesia aims to position itself as a global hub for sustainable and innovative medical device manufacturing by 2045.
