East Java Provincial Sports Week Spurs Economic Growth

Malang City is fully prepared to host the 2025 East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov IX), expected to draw around 25,000 visitors, including 19,000 athletes. The local government, led by Head of Sports and Tourism Baihaqi, has set four key success targets: effective event organization, competitive achievements, community economic empowerment, and transparent financial management. In particular, the city aims to leverage the event to stimulate economic growth. To support this, a dedicated mobile app will be launched, providing access to medical services, local MSMEs, restaurants, and real-time medal updates.

Hospitality and tourism sectors are already feeling the impact. Agoes Basoeki, Chair of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Malang, reported a significant increase in hotel bookings, especially in budget to mid-range accommodations. Collaborations with local tour guides and travel agencies are also underway to enhance visitor experiences, along with special offers during the event period. Hotel occupancy is projected to reach 80% during the games. Tourism economist Dr. Aang Afandi from the Malang State Polytechnic sees Porprov Jatim 2025 as a strategic opportunity to showcase Malang’s culinary and tourism assets. He highlighted the appeal of local culinary hubs like Oro-oro Dowo and Klojen markets. Influxes of athletes, officials, and spectators are expected to not only boost hotel stays but also drive the sales of local souvenirs and elevate the city’s profile as a travel destination.
