Fashion Emerges as a Key Driver of East Java's Creative Economy

Acting Governor of East Java, Emil Elestianto Dardak, emphasized that fashion has become one of the top contributors to the region’s creative economy. In 2023, East Java’s creative economy generated IDR 300 trillion in added value, with nearly 10% coming from fashion alone. More than just a cultural expression, fashion plays a vital role in boosting the regional GDP and job creation. Emil noted that East Java’s fashion sector contributed 20.85% to the national creative economy, surpassing the national average of 14%, and stands as the third-largest contributor in the region after culinary and crafts.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration among academia, government, and businesses, known as the triple helix model, in driving the sector forward. Supporting this, Chairwoman of East Java’s Dekranasda, Arumi Baschin Emil Dardak, underscored the pivotal role of universities in nurturing innovation and creativity. Through collaborative initiatives, ranging from workshops and student showcases to entrepreneurship training, young designers are empowered to develop their brands while promoting local identity. Arumi affirmed their commitment to strengthening the local creative ecosystem and ensuring that the youth become central to sustainable, innovation-driven regional growth.
