Specialty Chemicals Industry Set to Drive Economic Transformation

The Ministry of Industry is pushing the specialty chemicals sector to become a key driver of Indonesia’s industrial transformation. These products are considered strategically vital as they support a wide range of sectors, from processed foods and oil & gas to petrochemicals, paints, inks, and ceramics. According to Taufiek Bawazier, Director General of the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Textile Industries, part of the production is already taking place domestically, and local demand continues to rise each year. To enhance competitiveness and productivity, the Ministry encourages the sector to embrace advanced technology, improve production efficiency, and integrate into global supply chains. Various forms of government support are in place, including fiscal incentives, industrial infrastructure development, and strengthened R&D. Collaboration with industry players and research institutions also aims to accelerate the adoption of Industry 4.0 and environmentally friendly practices.

In the first quarter of 2025, exports from the chemical, pharmaceutical, and traditional medicine sectors reached USD 5.35 billion, ranking among the top five foreign exchange contributors in manufacturing. Strengthening this ecosystem further, the Ministry supported the new leadership of the Indonesian Specialty Chemicals Industry Association (AIKKI) for 2025–2028, with Ridwan Adipoetra appointed as Chairman. Taufiek expressed hope that AIKKI would act as a strategic link among industry, government, and research bodies. Ridwan affirmed AIKKI’s commitment to advancing a more adaptive, competitive, and sustainable specialty chemicals industry in Indonesia.
