Strengthening Indonesia-Australia Strategic Partnership in the Context of Global Economic Dynamics

On 4 June 2025, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto held a bilateral meeting with Australian Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell on the sidelines of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting in Paris. The meeting confirmed the strong commitment of both countries to strengthening the Indonesia–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). Airlangga welcomed the official approval of the 2025–2029 CSP Plan of Action (PoA) as a vital foundation for fostering collaboration in various strategic sectors, including trade, clean energy, digital transformation, and supply chain resilience. Moreover, Airlangga emphasised the importance of reactivating the Economic, Trade and Investment Ministers' Meeting (ETIMM) and Senior Economic Officials' Meeting (SEOM) forums, citing their prior success in aligning the strategic economic policies of the two countries.

In response to the 10% universal tariff imposed by the United States, Airlangga emphasised the need for solidarity between Indonesia and Australia in maintaining market openness and rejecting unilateral actions. Regarding the Indonesia–Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA), Airlangga welcomed the evaluation proposal to optimise the agreement's benefits more inclusively. Priority areas include micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM), investment and mutual recognition of standards.  Indonesia has expressed its appreciation for Australia's support for its accession process to the OECD and has requested Australia's full support for its accession to the CPTPP, following the completion of the questionnaire as a prospective member. Airlangga appreciated Prospera's continued technical cooperation supporting Indonesia's economic reforms. Prospera 2.0's continuation is hoped to fortify future policies in key sectors. Indonesia welcomed Australia's new Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 and is keen to discuss specific cooperation in energy transition, digital economy and education.
