Indonesia is seeking to expand its tropical fruit exports to New Zealand, targeting key horticultural products such as bananas, mangoes, and papayas, following the successful entry of pineapples into the market. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto raised this agenda during a bilateral meeting with New Zealand’s Minister for Trade, Todd McClay, at the OECD Ministerial Meeting in Paris. Airlangga expressed hope for broader market access for Indonesian fruits, emphasizing their quality and export readiness.
As of 2024, trade between Indonesia and New Zealand reached USD 1.92 billion, with Indonesia aiming to push more tropical fruit products into new markets. While the UAE remains the top destination for Indonesian pineapples, New Zealand is now in sight for other top-tier horticultural exports. Strengthening bilateral ties, both countries agreed to a comprehensive action plan aiming to raise total trade to NZD 6 billion (approx. IDR 58.7 trillion) by 2029. Additional cooperation includes clean energy initiatives, particularly in geothermal development, backed by a grant exceeding NZD 15 million, and expanded labor exchanges through work visas and potential Working Holiday programs. These collaborative efforts are expected to create lasting economic, social, and cultural benefits for both nations.
