The Ministry of Maritime Affairs Collaborates with China to Establish Maritime Vocational Campus

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has partnered with China to develop maritime science and technology. This partnership has led to the establishment of the Ocean Institute of Indonesia (OII), a vocational college focusing on maritime and fisheries education and technology. This technical cooperation involves the exchange of scientists and lecturers in developing science and technology in the marine sector. This includes observation and monitoring. Rapid technology advancements are integral to this development, including big data and artificial intelligence. Human resource development programmes will be implemented, including technology-based curricula and best practices from China. The initiative aims to enhance the capacity of lecturers, with scholarship opportunities for further studies and internships in China.

Graduates of the OII are expected to contribute directly to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' priority programmes, such as the development of saltwater tilapia farms in the Pantura region, which requires thousands of skilled workers. The OII has been designed to fulfil these goals and to act as the primary driver of marine ecosystems in Indonesia. It will achieve this by conducting research, supporting innovation, and working with key players in the national maritime sector. The scope of cooperation encompasses students, educators, and the community through the establishment of training centres. These facilities aim to distribute the results of cooperation for better marine and fisheries management.
