Biak's Bright Future as a Leading Marine Tourism Destination

Biak Numfor, a regency in Papua, holds enormous potential to become a national icon for marine tourism. Strategically located along Pacific shipping routes and rich in marine biodiversity, coral reefs, and historical World War II relics, Biak offers a unique mix of ecological, cultural, and economic value. Local traditions, natural beauty, and accessible attractions such as diving, island hopping, and cultural festivals like Biak Munara Wampasi could form the backbone of sustainable tourism.

Despite this promise, several challenges hinder development—including limited infrastructure, a lack of skilled tourism workers, minimal promotion, and low investor interest. Aviation and tourism expert Johannes King Sianturi emphasizes the need for a comprehensive, inclusive strategy to harness Biak's strengths. Strategic initiatives include building ecotourism and historical packages, training local human resources, promoting digital tourism, and preserving the environment. Overcoming weaknesses and threats, like underdeveloped transport networks and concerns about regional security, requires multi sector collaboration, smart policy, and active community involvement. With coordinated planning, infrastructure improvements, and strategic partnerships, Biak Numfor has the potential to emerge as a standout destination in Indonesia’s eastern tourism corridor.
