In April 2025, North Sumatra's natural rubber exports reached 20,799 tons, marking a 4% decrease compared to March's 21,666 tons, according to the Indonesian Rubber Association (Gapkindo) of North Sumatra. Despite this monthly decline, exports increased by 16.33% year-on-year from April 2024's 17,878 tons. The drop in April's exports is attributed to upstream supply reductions, fluctuating global prices, and export regulation challenges. Unpredictable weather further impacted production, with ongoing rains during the supposed dry season deterring farmers from tapping latex due to suboptimal yields. Additionally, the average price of SICOM TSR20 rubber fell to USD 171.15 cents per kilogram in April, down from USD 198.21 cents in March, diminishing farmers' motivation to produce.
Export destinations in April included 31 countries, with Japan leading at 35.01% of the total, followed by the United States (15.53%), China (9.14%), Brazil (7.57%), and Canada (5.44%). Exports to Europe, covering 12 countries, accounted for 10.51% of the total, a decrease from 12.73% in March. The sector faces additional pressures from global uncertainties, such as the impending European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) set to take effect on December 30th, 2025, requiring rubber products to originate from deforestation-free supply chains. Furthermore, new U.S. import tariffs have begun affecting shipments since April. These factors underscore the ongoing challenges confronting North Sumatra's rubber industry as it strives to maintain and expand its export performance amid evolving global trade dynamics.
