Sustainable Regulation Supports Economic Growth during the Pandemic

Indonesia along with Canada, the Philippines, the ASEAN Secretariat, the OECD, and the ADB held a virtual meeting at the International Seminar on Regulatory Improvement in Asia. The seminar aims to share good practices and experiences in building quality, effective and efficient regulations. This international seminar was held in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture and the NSLIC / NSELRED project. Effective, quality and sustainable regulations are essential to support economic growth, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo in his speech conveyed the importance of this meeting for Indonesia. "This seminar is very important for Indonesia, in making various improvements to domestic regulations, especially with the enactment of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation, which is a monumental step for Indonesia in managing domestic regulations," he said.This international seminar discussed examples of good practices and their implementation in improving regulations with a special emphasis on the impacts and challenges on the agricultural sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, experiences in the process of making regulations and formulating a strategy for regulatory sustainability are also discussed in this activity. Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Cameron MacKay, congratulates the Government of Indonesia on the continuous improvement of the regulatory process.

According to him, quality regulation must be evidence-based, provide consultation with stakeholders, including international partners, and be in accordance with relevant international agreements. Regulations need to be reviewed and revised regularly to keep up with changing technology and societal needs."I am very pleased that our project supports the Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen its capacity in developing quality regulations that benefit farmers, communities and businesses in the agricultural sector. It is hoped that sharing good practices and experiences in improving regulations can trigger regulatory improvements among participating countries. seminars and encourage the investment climate, "he explained. Effective, quality and sustainable regulation is essential, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic, where improved regulations in the agricultural sector can support economic recovery and growth.

NSLIC / NSELRED has provided technical assistance to the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture since 2019 in analyzing regulations and making Norms, Standards, Procedures and Criteria (NSPK) and Risk-Based Approach that supports Online Single Submission / OSS. OSS is the Government of Indonesia's web-based platform that aims to simplify and reduce the time and process of business licensing in Indonesia.
