The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) and the National Crafts Council (Dekranas) have successfully empowered Indonesia’s small and medium-sized craft enterprises (IKM) to expand into global markets through a strategic collaboration focused on innovation and sustainability. With Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity, local crafts possess unique stories, traditional techniques, and strong artistic identities that appeal to international consumers seeking authentic, ethnic, and eco-friendly products.
Director General of Small, Medium, and Various Industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita, highlighted the importance of tailored support through training, technical assistance, and webinars. One such event, held on May 22, 2025, showcased success stories like CV Palem Craft (home décor exports to the Netherlands), CV Sweda Gembira (MotoGP trophies and hip-hop accessories to the U.S.), and CV Maharani (stone and woven décor to several European and Asian countries). These IKMs demonstrated how innovation, attention to market trends, and creative adaptation can drive export success. By February 2025, Indonesian craft exports had already reached USD 106.6 million, with major markets including the U.S., China, Japan, and Europe. However, Reni emphasized the need for IKM players to stay agile by improving product quality, leveraging technology, and aligning with global trends. Director Budi Setiawan also underlined the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration to strengthen the IKM ecosystem, believing this joint effort will help Indonesian crafts thrive on the world stage while preserving local identity.
