Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah has announced West Sumatra's readiness to become a national hub for green energy and digital industry investment. Backed by substantial untapped potential in renewable energy sources, hydropower, geothermal, solar, and wind, the province aims to attract large-scale sustainable investments. Speaking at the 2025 Investment Forum hosted by the Indonesian Electricity Society (MKI), Mahyeldi emphasized that regions like Solok, Solok Selatan, Pasaman, and Tanah Datar offer significant energy potential, with only a small portion currently utilized. For example, only 29.75% of the 1,100 MW hydropower potential and 5% of the 1,705 MWe geothermal capacity have been tapped.
The governor underscored that this clean energy supply can support the growing demand for reliable, eco-friendly electricity in the digital industry, especially data centers. He asserted that West Sumatra is well-positioned as a prime destination for sustainable investment in Indonesia. Echoing this, MKI Sumbar Chair Insanul Kamil noted that the province’s energy potential offers a strong foundation for digital sector growth. PLN’s General Manager for West Sumatra, Ajrun Karim, confirmed that several renewable energy plants, including hydropower and geothermal stations, are already operational and integrated into Sumatra’s power grid. Smaller micro-hydro facilities further bolster local low-voltage systems. With more projects underway, Sumatra's energy infrastructure is expanding to meet both community and industrial needs. This coordinated effort reflects a strong commitment to a greener, digitally empowered future.
