Regent of Yapen Islands Officially Flags Off Shipment of 14 Tons of Mackerel and Red Snapper to Jakarta

The Regent of Yapen Islands, Benyamin Arisoy, officially launched the shipment of 14 tons of mackerel and red snapper to Jakarta on May 20, 2025, at the Domine Izak Samuel Kijne Port in Serui, Papua. Accompanied by Deputy Regent Roi Palunga, Arisoy highlighted the significance of the fisheries, agriculture, and tourism sectors for the livelihoods of local communities. He emphasized the need for ongoing government support, particularly in improving infrastructure such as cold storage facilities, and called for consistency from fishermen to ensure sustainable and routine exports. He also urged local government agencies to collaborate in enhancing these initiatives to benefit village-level economies.

Head of the Yapen Islands Fisheries Department, Daniel Reba, explained that the fish were sourced from several coastal districts and that his department continues to provide training and equipment—including fiber boats, outboard motors, and cold chain tools—to local fishermen. The shipment, the third of its kind, was collected over several months and sent via KM Ciremai to a processing company in Jakarta. However, Reba noted the need for clearer local regulations to ensure that future transactions are legally protected and economically beneficial to the region. PT Jayawi Internasional, the receiving company, stressed the importance of proper post-harvest handling to maintain product quality during transport.
