Sofifi, North Maluku — The Regional Marine and Fisheries Agency (DKP) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing North Maluku's capture fisheries and aquaculture sectors, aligning with national priorities and local leadership under Sherly-Sarbin. Acting Head of DKP, Fauzi Momole, stated that the region’s vast marine area requires integrated programs with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, with a strong focus on resource monitoring and sustainable practices.
DKP is tailoring its initiatives to strengthen both capture and aquaculture fisheries, while also enhancing competitiveness and managing the region’s small islands with rich fishery potential. Budget allocations will be adjusted to support the provision of fishing gear, boats, and infrastructure needed by local fishers. Another major focus is the development of fish processing facilities to increase both quantity and quality of local outputs. DKP is also targeting the growth of small-scale industries along coastal areas and plans to organize fishers into community clusters for better support. Addressing the challenge of long-distance fishing trips, particularly to areas like Morotai, will be part of future strategies. Governor Sherly Tjoanda is supporting small-scale fishers through an upcoming boat aid program, which DKP is verifying on-site to ensure accurate delivery. “Our budget planning will remain focused on directly empowering North Maluku’s fishing communities. Strengthening fishery industries and increasing catch output to meet national needs is our core mission,” Fauzi concluded.
