Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto recently met with UK Ambassador Dominic Jermey to deepen bilateral relations following President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the UK in November 2024. The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to open and sustainable economic cooperation, particularly in addressing rising global protectionism and supply chain disruptions. A key highlight was the launch of the Indonesia–UK Economic Growth Partnership (EGP) to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties. This new framework aims to drive cross-sectoral collaboration and economic development. Discussions also covered Indonesia’s accession to the OECD, with Airlangga requesting continued UK support ahead of Indonesia’s submission of its Initial Memorandum at the OECD Ministerial Council in June 2025. In return, the UK welcomed Indonesia’s active engagement in joining the CPTPP, reflecting its dedication to regional economic integration.
The two sides also explored future cooperation beyond trade, including education and healthcare. One major initiative is the development of a King’s College London campus in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in East Java, which is expected to enhance higher education and workforce skills in Indonesia. Airlangga further invited UK participation in developing healthcare-focused SEZs in Sanur and Batam to attract investment and boost healthcare quality. The UK also announced its upcoming Industrial Strategy, set for release in June 2025, which focuses on energy and industrial resilience—presenting more collaboration opportunities. The meeting underscored a shared vision for inclusive and innovative economic growth between the two nations.
