On 20 May 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, received a visit from the Swiss Ambassador to Indonesia, Olivier Zehnder, in Jakarta. Both parties explored opportunities to enhance collaboration across sectors of Swiss expertise, including vocational education, research, and cooperative development. Indonesia and Switzerland have agreed to maximise economic, trade and investment cooperation by utilising the Indonesia-EFTA CEPA, with Switzerland as the largest EFTA partner for Indonesia. It was mutually acknowledged that both parties are committed to enhancing collaboration to ensure Indonesia's food security. Furthermore, within the context of fostering enhanced Swiss investment cooperation in Indonesia, the Indonesia-Switzerland Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement is a valuable legal framework.
By 2024, the total trade value between Indonesia and Switzerland reached approximately USD 2.3 billion, with Indonesia's main export commodities including jewellery, precious metals, and footwear. Furthermore, Switzerland is a major European investor in Indonesia, with a particular focus on the pharmaceutical and food industry sectors. In the future, Indonesia and Switzerland will continue to expand economic opportunities through various cooperation mechanisms.
