Indonesia and Italy's Cooperation on Food Security and the Maritime Economy

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesia's cooperation with Italy is a vital component in achieving national food security and maritime economic growth. This cooperation includes the renewal of the fisheries fleet and other key sectors. During an honorary visit to the office from the Italian Ambassador to Indonesia, Roberto Colamine, who recently presented his credentials to President Prabowo on 6 May 2025, Sugiono stated that the Indonesian government is currently focusing on accelerating the transformation of the green economy, technological independence, and strengthening national industry. Indonesia has invited Italy to consider increasing investment in key sectors, focusing on renewable energy, electric vehicles, agriculture, and infrastructure. Minister Sugiono and Ambassador Colamine also discussed cooperation in the defence sector, particularly concerning defence equipment procurement. This includes the potential for future collaboration in technology transfer, joint production, and national defence industry capacity building, to promote independence.

The meeting with the Italian Ambassador demonstrates the commitment of both countries to maximise the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation and to continue to generate positive results at the bilateral and international levels. Italy is Indonesia's third-largest trading partner in Europe, with bilateral trade value in 2024 reaching USD 3.95 billion and Italian investment in Indonesia reaching USD 70.5 million — a significant increase of 46% from 2023.
