Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin reaffirmed his commitment to accelerating urban development by fostering strong collaboration between the city government and local private sector players. Speaking at the inauguration of the Makassar chapter of the National Construction Companies Association (GAPEKSINDO) for the 2025–2030 term, Munafri emphasized the critical role of local entrepreneurs in ensuring that the economic benefits of ongoing development projects remain within the city. While Makassar has long been active in infrastructure development, he noted that much of the work has been executed by contractors from outside the city, which limits the economic impact on local communities.
To address this, Mayor Munafri introduced a policy ensuring that at least 50% of the city’s project spending goes to Makassar-based companies, with the other half allocated to support local MSMEs. By prioritizing local firms—provided they meet standards of professionalism and transparency—he aims to ensure that public funds circulate within Makassar, stimulating broader economic activity and reducing dependence on external contractors. He also outlined strategic initiatives, including building new sub-district offices and renovating long-neglected schools, reinforcing the city’s investment in public infrastructure. The mayor underscored the importance of transparent procurement practices, urging local entrepreneurs to take active roles rather than act merely as intermediaries. His vision reflects a broader strategy to boost local capacity and ensure that Makassar’s development directly benefits its residents.
