Ministry Promotes Hexahelix Collaboration to Strengthen Batik Industry

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) is championing a collaborative hexahelix model—linking associations, government, private sector, academia, financial institutions, and communities—to empower the batik industry, particularly in West Java. Minister Teuku Riefky emphasized the importance of preserving traditional arts like batik through innovation and cooperation, aiming to not only protect cultural heritage but also generate quality employment for younger generations. During a meeting with the West Java Batik Foundation (YBJB), the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to addressing key challenges such as financing access, lack of artisan regeneration, and promotional difficulties.

To support creative industry players, the ministry facilitates intellectual property (IP) protection, including assistance with brand registration. Special schemes for MSMEs offer significantly reduced fees, encouraging more artisans to safeguard their creations. YBJB, which represents over 4,000 artisans, is already innovating by integrating AI into design processes while maintaining traditional canting techniques. The foundation also supports artisans from diverse backgrounds, ranging from young beginners to seasoned professionals utilizing e-commerce and running independent showrooms. According to Deputy Minister Yuke Sri Rahayu, partnerships with organizations like YBJB are vital to strengthen the creative value chain and establish the sector as a new engine of economic growth. This initiative highlights how batik can thrive through a balance of tradition and technology, backed by inclusive, multi-sector collaboration.
