Ministry of Industry Encourages Rendang Industry to Penetrate Global Market

Rendang, one of Indonesia's culinary specialties that has gone global, has great potential to continue to be developed as a pillar of the local and national economy. The city of Payakumbuh, known as "The City of Rendang", has made rendang not only a cultural heritage, but also an economic strength through the development of small and medium industries (SMEs). One successful example is the Rendang Gadih SME or PT Gadih Minang Anugrah, which produces ready-to-eat packaged rendang and ready-to-cook spices without preservatives. With more than 20 product variants, this SME has inaugurated a modern, hygienic production facility, marking the transformation from a home industry to large-scale manufacturing.

The Ministry of Industry through the Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) supports the development of rendang SMEs with various programs, such as revitalizing SME centers, restructuring production machines and equipment, and facilitating food safety certification such as HACCP and SNI. The program aims to improve the competitiveness of rendang products in local and global markets, as well as support the national initiative Indonesia Spice Up the World (ISUTW) which targets exports of Indonesian spices and processed foods of up to USD 2 billion. With government support and collaboration between industry players, central and regional governments, and related stakeholders, the rendang industry is expected to continue to grow, strengthen the local economy, and introduce Indonesia's culinary richness to the international scene.
