PT Hyundai LG Industry (HLI) Green Power, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution, plays a vital role in both domestic and global electric vehicle (EV) supply chains. Located in Karawang, West Java, the factory processes raw NMC materials—nickel, manganese, and cobalt—into battery cells, which are then supplied to PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia to be assembled into battery packs for EVs. According to CEO Ki Chul Hong, HLI Green Power is committed to meeting global standards in battery cell production to ensure high-quality EV performance. This commitment supports Indonesia’s ambition to become a competitive player in the global EV industry.
The facility has a daily production capacity of 120,000 battery cells, reaching an annual maximum of 32.64 million cells. Of this total, an impressive 98%—around 19.75 million cells—are exported to support Hyundai and Kia’s EV production worldwide, while only 2% is allocated for domestic EV manufacturing needs at Hyundai’s Indonesian plant. Ubaidah Jarrah of HLI’s Cell Technology Team explained that the facility completes the entire process from raw materials to battery cell plates using four production lines. The Karawang plant is not only advancing Indonesia's role in global EV supply chains but also represents Hyundai's investment in localizing battery technology. This large-scale export operation underscores Indonesia's growing importance in the global electrification movement and its readiness to serve international EV markets.
