For the First Time, Karo Deputy Regent Flags Off Potato and Sweet Potato Export to Singapore

For the first time during his term, Karo Deputy Regent Komando Tarigan officially launched the export of fresh potatoes and sweet potatoes to Singapore. The shipment—resulting from a collaboration between Alamanda Singapore Pte Ltd and PT. Gabe Tiga Puluh—was dispatched from the warehouse of PT. Koncota Agro Mandiri in Gurusinga Village, Berastagi District, on May 5, 2025. Karo Regency is one of North Sumatra’s key potato production centers, cultivating 4,585 hectares and producing over 82,000 tons in 2024. Sweet potatoes, especially the Cilembu variety, are also a promising export commodity, with 490 hectares yielding over 7,100 tons. The government supports agricultural advancement through export facilitation between local businesses and international partners.

This new partnership exports 60 tons of potatoes and 20 tons of sweet potatoes monthly to Singapore, with plans to scale up based on market demand. Deputy Regent Komando Tarigan stated that the initiative represents a concrete step toward achieving food security and improving farmer welfare. He expressed gratitude to farmers and stakeholders involved, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering synergy between farmers, business players, and logistics partners. Meanwhile, Acting Head of Agriculture Michael Purba confirmed that the exported varieties are Granola potatoes and Cilembu sweet potatoes, with a potential volume of 4–6 containers monthly depending on demand and supply. The ceremony was also attended by officials from agricultural and trade departments, quarantine authorities, private partners, and local farmer groups.
