Malang Regency has successfully exported its renowned Dampit robusta coffee, with exports reaching 45,000 tons annually, particularly to European markets like the Netherlands through PT Asal Jaya. Although Malang contributes around 13,000–15,000 tons, limited land (18,000 hectares) and low productivity (0.8–1.1 tons/ha) remain challenges. To address this, the GoTo Impact Foundation (GIF) launched a sustainable agribusiness initiative, Gandrung Tirta, under its Catalyst Changemakers Ecosystem (CCE) 3.0 program. The initiative integrates IoT, AI, and community empowerment to support farmers, women, and youth in Desa Ketindan, Lawang, aiming to improve productivity and tap into the growing domestic coffee market.
Gandrung Tirta combines efforts from four organizations and employs three key strategies: advanced farming technology to monitor plant health and optimize inputs, waste management that turns coffee skin into value-added goods like wallets and eyewear, and educational programs on sustainable cultivation and entrepreneurship. These efforts aim to boost productivity by 18% and farmer income by 15% within the first year. The initiative also aligns with Malang’s green economy goals, targeting a 66.84% green economy index by 2045. Regional leaders see this as a holistic approach to not only increase coffee output but also ensure long-term environmental and social sustainability, making Malang a model for inclusive agricultural transformation.
