President Prabowo Subianto received a visit from the Special Envoy of the Japanese Prime Minister, who is also a former Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida at his residence in Kertanegara, Jakarta. The two parties discussed the development of cooperation projects within the framework of AZEC or the Asia Zero Emission Community. Indonesia will also receive an investment of USD 500 million or IDR 8.2 trillion (exchange rate of IDR 16,400) from Japan for the 80 megawatt (MW) geothermal project in West Sumatra. "On Tuesday 6th May there will be a signing of the financial closing for the project in Muara Laboh, West Sumatra, where the project is 80 MW geothermal with an investment of around USD 500 million," said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto in a written statement, Monday (5/5/2025).
Airlangga added that currently Indonesia has more than 170 MoUs with Japan. Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for the close cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. The Head of State also hopes that this collaboration can continue to be strengthened amidst the challenges of global uncertainty. The President appreciates the cooperation between Indonesia and Japan and hopes that this can continue to be improved amidst the uncertainty due to the tariff war, explained Airlangga. During the meeting, Kishida also delivered a letter from the Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, to Prabowo. One of the things the letter related to was AZEC. "Of course, former PM Kishida delivered a letter from Prime Minister Ishiba which was delivered directly to the President and of course one of the contents was related to him being a special envoy of the Prime Minister specifically for these AZEC projects," said AirlanggaMeanwhile, Kishida emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between the two countries amidst the uncertain global situation. "Kishida also conveyed how this situation has become uncertain and in a situation like this, cooperation between the two countries is very important," said Airlangga.
