The Deputy Regent of Karo, Komando Tarigan, officially marked a significant milestone in regional agriculture by launching the export of fresh potatoes and sweet potatoes to Singapore, in partnership with Alamanda Singapore Pte Ltd and PT. Gabe Tiga Puluh. Held at PT. Koncota Agro Mandiri’s warehouse in Berastagi, this collaboration showcases Karo’s potential as a key agricultural hub. The region, known for being North Sumatra's largest potato producer, boasts a 2024 output of 82,244 tons from over 4,500 hectares. Sweet potatoes follow as a rising export, with 7,104 tons harvested from 490 hectares. This initiative enables an average monthly export of 60 tons of potatoes and 20 tons of sweet potatoes. In his address, Tarigan emphasized the importance of strengthening food resilience and farmer welfare through sustained partnerships with stakeholders.
Karo’s agricultural sector is undergoing a positive resurgence, supported by government efforts to reconnect with international markets. The area leads in multiple crops and livestock production across North Sumatra, including corn, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, and citrus, and even floriculture with millions of cut flowers annually. While Karo’s dominance had declined in recent years, its highland produce still ranks among the best in Indonesia. With renewed focus on improving market reach and export performance, this initiative symbolizes hope for the revival of Karo’s farming glory. The region’s cool climate, rich culture, and scenic landscape further enhance its appeal as a prime investment destination in agribusiness and ecotourism.
