The Indonesian government continues to encourage the downstreaming of swiftlet nest (SBW) exports as part of its industrialization strategy, aiming to increase added value and improve the welfare of local communities. According to the Head of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, Sahat Manaor Panggabean, the downstreaming process goes beyond mere processing. It is also seen as a gateway to broader industrialization, opening up new opportunities for economic growth.
The SBW downstreaming project is designed to involve a wide range of stakeholders, including shrimp farmers, plantation workers, and local communities, ensuring that its benefits are felt at all levels. Hong Kong remains the largest export destination for SBW, followed by China and Vietnam. Of the 49 companies exporting SBW to China, an estimated 24,400 workers are employed in the processing sector, not including indirect workers.
