Sustainable Tuna from Indonesia Penetrates the Global Market

Indonesia has succeeded in seizing the opportunity to increase exports of fishery products on the global stage. This is indicated by the increasing demand for tuna commodities after achieving certification that ensures sustainable fishing in terms of both fish populations and marine ecosystems. The sustainable fisheries standards organization - Marine Stewardship Council (MS) stated that the volume of certified global tuna increased by 24%, or almost 300 thousand metric tons in the 2024-2025 period. Head of Species Strategies MSC Laura Rodriguez explained to reporters in Jakarta, Sunday (4/5/2025) that the figure was based on data released by MSC in the latest edition of the Sustainable Tuna Yearbook. "This data includes sales of fresh tuna from fish counters, frozen, in ready-to-eat or pet food, and canned tuna," explained Laura.

MSC announced that several tuna fisheries have just been certified as environmentally sustainable fisheries this year. Among them are Kyowa-Meiho, the first Japanese purse seine tuna fishery to receive certification; Australian Southern Bluefin tuna; and Senegal’s Atlantic tuna fishery made history as the first fishery to meet the MSC Fisheries Standard in West Africa. South Africa’s pole-and-line albacore tuna fishery became the first fishery to successfully progress through the MSC Improvement Program towards certification by 2024. Currently, 2.82 million tonnes of tuna from MSC-certified fisheries are produced annually, accounting for half of the global wild tuna catch. In Indonesia, by April 2025, around 14,000 metric tonnes of yellowfin and skipjack tuna from 2,227 vessels had met the MSC sustainability standard, with some of this sales going to the domestic market. “Sales of eco labelled tuna have been growing over the past few years and show no signs of slowing down. It’s inspiring to see the progress that tuna fisheries around the world are making to meet retail and consumer demand, which is indirectly driving this progress on the ground,” Laura explained.
