On April 29, 2025, Indonesia’s Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, met with Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Taku Eto, in Jakarta to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in the food sector. Indonesia proposed increasing exports of mangoes and fish to Japan, while Japan expressed interest in exporting beef and dairy products to Indonesia, particularly due to Indonesia's growing demand for milk. Recognizing the mutual benefits, both sides explored ways to strengthen food trade partnerships.
Rather than focusing solely on imports, Arief encouraged Japan to invest directly in Indonesia’s food sector. He highlighted that foreign investment would create a more sustainable food ecosystem, involving local farmers and boosting the domestic economy. Indonesia's current policy favors partnerships that go beyond trade—offering opportunities for Japanese investors to establish food processing industries on Indonesian soil. This approach supports long-term food security and adds local economic value. Arief also emphasized that business-to-business (B2B) collaboration is highly welcomed, as it aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategy to meet national food needs through integrated and inclusive development. The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ shared interest in deepening ties and building resilient, mutually beneficial food supply chains.
