Indonesia-South Korea collaborate to cultivate napoleon fish sustainably

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia together with the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) of South Korea (Korsel) collaborate to maintain the napoleon fish population through a sustainable cultivation development scheme in Indonesia. The Director General of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Tb Haeru Rahayu (Tebe) said the collaboration was stated in the Project for Smart Technological Support to Improve Aquaculture Productivity in Indonesia. "Napoleon fish is a type of fish listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries will continue to strengthen its existence, one of which is from the aspect of napoleon fish cultivation," said Tebe, in Jakarta. Since the project began in 2023, several activities have been carried out, including increasing the capacity of human resources in the field of marine cultivation, implementing several stages of napoleon fish breeding, and building hatchery.

The cooperation project with NIFS South Korea was implemented at the Batam Marine Aquaculture Center (BPBL). Batam was chosen because it has great potential to develop marine fish farming, such as napoleon fish. Its location is also on an international shipping route. Through this cooperation project, Tebe hopes that the productivity of napoleon fish farming will increase. Napoleon has high economic value and is an export commodity that in great demand in the Hong Kong and Chinese markets with competitive prices," said Tebe. Head of the Aquaculture Industry Research Department at NIFS Korea Lee Jeong-yong said the construction of napoleon fish farming facilities at BPBL Batam aims to increase the productivity of aquaculture in Indonesia. "The construction of napoleon fish farming facilities at BPBL Batam is a form of cooperation in developing aquaculture technology which is a new challenge as well as a valuable experience for both countries," said Lee Jeong-yong.
