The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is targeting Indonesia to become the world's leading halal producer, considering that the industry has great development opportunities, with the value of export transactions last year reaching USD 64.11 billion or IDR 1.08 quadrillion (exchange rate IDR 16,840). "It is important for us to fully work together to realize Indonesia's dream of becoming the world's leading halal producer. We must firmly strengthen and improve the entire halal industry ecosystem. This is not just a goal but a strategic need," said Deputy Minister of Industry (Wamenperin) Faisol Riza at the Kick Off Halal Indo 2025 event, in Jakarta, on Monday. The Deputy Minister of Industry said that Indonesia's sharia economy position at the global level continues to increase in various sectors. This is reflected in the data in The State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2023/2024, which states that Indonesia has succeeded in rising one rank to third place after Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
However, for the halal-based pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors, Indonesia still needs a boost compared to countries with non-Muslim majorities. Another challenge in developing the halal industry is the suboptimal global branding of halal products. According to him, other countries such as Thailand, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, and China have positioned themself as a producer or supplier of halal products or as halal tourism. "These countries have implemented strategic branding to secure their position in the global halal market," he said. Therefore, to improve the branding of the domestic halal industry to become a leading producer in the world, the Ministry of Industry will hold the Halal Indonesia International Industry Expo (Halal Indo) 2025 on September 25-28th, 2025 in Tangerang, Banten. Last year's Halal Indo attracted the attention of more than 12 thousand visitors, with a transaction value of IDR 1.3 billion and a total commitment of IDR 6 billion.
