In 2025, the value of rattan exports from Cirebon Regency reached USD 3.16 million, representing more than 60% of the total furniture and handicraft exports. The Cirebon Regency Trade and Industry Office (Disperdagin) has reported that the rattan exports comprised three main shipments totalling USD 1.3 million in January, USD 1.8 million in February and USD 3.1 million in April. This surge in export value is a positive indication for the handicraft sector, including micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM), affected by the pandemic and global economic slowdown. Demand for rattan furniture from European countries, the United States and East Asia has shown signs of stabilisation, with buyers returning to placing orders in large quantities. In addition, innovative designs and improved quality of local products are considered capable of competing in the global market.
Since the 1980s, the rattan industry has been one of Cirebon Regency's key sectors. It employs thousands of artisans across various production centres, including those in Weru, Plumbon, and Plered subdistricts. The majority of rattan products that are exported include lounge chairs, coffee tables and storage racks, as well as home decoration accessories. This industry is not only a significant generator of foreign exchange, but it also employs thousands of local workers. Disperdagin continues to encourage product competitiveness through design training, quality certification, and facilitation of international trade shows. Moreover, Disperdagin is collaborating with the Indonesian Ministry of Trade to establish new market access in the Middle East and Africa. However, rattan handicraft UMKM in Cirebon Regency face challenges due to the United States' high import tariff policy, which impacts the continuity of exports and represents a key market for them.
