The Galang Batang Special Economic Zone (KEK) on Bintan Island, Riau Archipelago, continues to play a pivotal role in driving regional economic growth and improving the welfare of local communities. PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI) owner, George Santos, highlighted the zone's success, attributed to well-developed infrastructure, including a port capable of handling ships up to 75,000 tons, and a reliable power supply. The power capacity, which currently stands at 1,000 megawatts, is expected to rise to 2,300 megawatts. The support of the local community has also contributed to a favorable investment climate, with small businesses like restaurants and laundromats benefiting from the growing economy.
KEK Galang Batang has become home to various key industries, including bauxite refining, garments, caustic soda, solar panels, and limestone production, with plans for LNG industry development in the near future. The bauxite downstreaming prospects are particularly promising, given the strong global demand for alumina, especially from China. Since the launch of its first Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) export in 2022, both production and export volumes have surged. Investment in the area has also seen a significant rise, from IDR 20 trillion in 2023 to IDR 30 trillion in 2024. The development has created thousands of local jobs, empowering small businesses and driving local economic growth, while also contributing to social initiatives.
