Boosting the Export Market, the Ministry of Agriculture Encourages the Development of Various Types of Chrysanthemum Flowers

Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Syahrul Yasin Limpo encouraged the Plant and Horticulture Research Institute (Balithi) to continue to innovate in developing various types of chrysanthemums. Especially for flowers that have the potential to be an export commodity and are in great demand by foreign markets. "During the pandemic, although a number of export commodities have decreased the number of orders, but not for chrysanthemum cut flowers are still ordered by various markets abroad, so the cultivation of ornamental plants must continue to be improved and developed," said the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul when opening the Plant Innovation Expose event. He said various innovations, including developing chrysanthemum flowers in the lowlands, which are already running in the Cianjur area, could be a motivation for residents. So that they want to run a decorative flower cultivation business to boost the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic, even though they only have less land. "This can be an opportunity for residents because the market needs for ornamental flowers of this type of chrysanthemum are many enthusiasts abroad. The opportunity to become a farmer in ornamental flower cultivation is wide open, just study at Balithi," he said.

Researcher of Chrysanthemum Balithi Segunung-Cianjur Prof. Budimarwoto said that until now the need for chrysanthemum flowers for foreign markets continues to increase every year. Currently, Indonesia can export up to 480 million stalks of chrysanthemum per year, while the annual production reaches 500 million stalks. "Currently, research centers throughout Indonesia continue to innovate in developing chrysanthemum flowers that can be planted in various land conditions ranging from highlands to lowlands. Even Balithi Cianjur is developing chrysanthemums that can be planted in hot areas such as cities," he said.
According to him, various developments include lowland chrysanthemum, whose yields are quite competitive with those in the highlands. Moreover, it is currently being developed in various regions in Indonesia, to fulfill foreign market orders which have never decreased every year. "Interest in foreign markets is quite high every month from Japan and a number of countries in the Middle East. Even today, chrysanthemum flowers are also starting to be seen in a number of countries in Europe," he said.
