The government through the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) will encourage the expansion of the export market for domestic products. This step was taken amidst the reciprocal tariff policy implemented by the United States to a number of its trading partner countries, including Indonesia. The US policy has the potential to reduce export demand for a number of goods from Indonesia. Alternative market penetration is considered necessary so that Indonesia's export performance remains positive. The Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, said that the government is currently focusing on collaborating with non-traditional partner countries. "Actually, before there was a tariff policy, we had focused on opening alternative markets or non-traditional markets. We have successfully explored many non-traditional markets," said Djatmiko at the Ministry of Trade Office, Jakarta, Monday (21/4/2025).
First, Indonesia and Canada have signed a Joint Statement on the Completion of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) Negotiations. Not only cooperation in trade in goods, this agreement also provides preferential treatment for Indonesian service providers, including for the business services, telecommunications, construction, tourism, and transportation sectors. Meanwhile, regarding investment cooperation, the agreement will facilitate access to investment in the manufacturing, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, mining and excavation sectors, and energy infrastructure. In addition, Indonesia is currently communicating with Tunisia regarding Indonesia-Tunisia trade cooperation in the form of a Preferential Trade Agreement. Djatmiko said that Tunisia is said to be one of the entry points and will provide a great opportunity to market Indonesian products in the North African countries. Indonesia is also targeting countries in the South American region, especially Peru, the European Union, and the Eurasian region. "Eurasia is a customs union, consisting of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan. This also has extraordinary potential, if we can have Eurasian agreements," concluded Djatmiko.
