Agriculture Seen as a Strength of South Sulawesi's Logistics Industry

The Indonesian Logistics and Forwarding Association (ALFI) predicts continuous growth in South Sulawesi’s logistics sector, driven by the strengthening agricultural industry this year. Syaifuddin Syahrudi, Chair of ALFI South Sulawesi and West Sulawesi, emphasized that Sulsel remains a top rice producer, supplying several regions. The growth in agriculture is expected to boost rice production and increase shipments, positively impacting logistics performance. With the region's economy heavily reliant on agriculture, this will likely improve the broader economy as well. "As a major rice producer, we believe logistics in Sulsel will rise because economic growth leads to increased logistics demand," Syahrudi stated.

ALFI Chairman Akbar Djohan highlighted Sulsel’s strategic role as a key player in the national supply chain in Eastern Indonesia. The agricultural strength provides additional momentum to logistics growth, ensuring reliable services and competitive costs. "This region's food self-sufficiency guarantees stability in logistics services, helping to reduce the logistics cost gap between Java and Eastern Indonesia," Djohan explained. He also hopes Sulsel can capitalize on government programs like the 3 Million Houses and food security initiatives to further boost the logistics sector. By early April 2025, Sulsel had harvested 123,397 hectares of rice, surpassing last year's yield despite challenges from El Niño-induced drought.
