Porang has emerged as a promising new agricultural commodity in Sidenreng Rappang (Sidrap), South Sulawesi, with strong potential for export. Local government efforts, led by Regent Syaharuddin Alrif, have transformed this once-overlooked crop into a high-value economic asset. What began as a personal initiative—planting porang on his own land in Salomallori Village—has now evolved into a successful model of modern, export-oriented farming. Harvested porang is processed on-site using advanced technology, turning it into glucomannan chips or flour, which are then shipped to markets in Asia and Europe for use in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
The porang initiative has created a positive ripple effect across the community. Dozens of local residents are now involved in cultivation, care, harvesting, and processing. Several trained farmers have even started managing their own plots. This project is not only enhancing economic opportunities but also positioning Sidrap as a center of agricultural productivity. The local government is actively preparing technical support and improving market access to scale up porang cultivation. With this strategic approach, Sidrap aims to be known not just for its cultural and religious values, but also for its role in driving sustainable agribusiness and rural economic growth.
