Tourism Powers Economy with USD 16.7 Billion Contribution, Government Pushes for Sustainable Growth

The Indonesian government is placing tourism at the forefront of its economic strategy, recognizing its powerful role in generating foreign exchange and creating jobs. In 2024, the tourism sector contributed a significant USD 16.7 billion to the national economy, attracted over 13 million international visitors, and employed nearly 25 million people. Amid global uncertainties and trade disruptions, Indonesia is choosing to strengthen domestically-driven sectors—particularly tourism—as a means to sustain economic momentum and reduce poverty.

At the 37th Joint Meeting of the UN Tourism Commissions for East Asia, the Pacific, and South Asia in Jakarta, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto emphasized the need for transformative strategies in tourism. He highlighted ongoing government initiatives such as community-based tourism and the shift from mass tourism to more sustainable, high-quality travel experiences. The current administration, under President Prabowo Subianto, is committed to eco-friendly and locally rooted tourism development. Airlangga also called for stronger international collaboration, stressing that shared prosperity can be achieved through mutually beneficial partnerships. He concluded by encouraging global delegates to explore Indonesia’s rich cultural and culinary heritage, while turning such forums into real opportunities for inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.
