On Saturday, April 12, 2025, Indonesia shipped 200 kilograms of fresh coconuts to Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in eastern China. This marks the country’s first-ever export of fresh coconuts to China, a milestone in growing economic cooperation between the two nations. The shipment coincides with the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China, underlining a stronger trade partnership. Back in November 2024, China’s General Administration of Customs officially approved fresh coconut imports from Indonesia, provided they met strict quality and phytosanitary standards.
China's coconut imports have risen steadily in recent years, with the market expanding beyond traditional suppliers like Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This growing demand opens new doors for Indonesia—one of the world's largest coconut producers—to further penetrate the Chinese market. According to customs data, bilateral trade between Indonesia and China exceeded 1 trillion yuan (around USD 138.72 billion) for the first time in 2024. In the first two months of 2025 alone, trade volume hit 172.57 billion yuan, showing a 4.7% year-on-year increase. The debut shipment of Indonesian coconuts symbolizes a promising new chapter in agricultural exports and economic synergy between the two countries.
