Government Pushes Tourism as a Key Driver for Economic Growth

The Indonesian government is positioning tourism as a powerful engine for economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation amid ongoing global uncertainties. In 2024 alone, Indonesia welcomed over 13 million international visitors, with the tourism sector contributing nearly 25 million jobs and generating USD 16.7 billion in foreign exchange. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto highlighted these achievements during the 37th Joint Meeting of the UN Tourism Commissions for East Asia-Pacific and South Asia in Jakarta. He emphasized the sector’s resilience and transformative potential, especially as global trade faces disruptions from new U.S. tariffs and economic projections are revised downward.

Minister Airlangga underscored President Prabowo Subianto's strong commitment to advancing sustainable and community-based tourism. The government is shifting away from mass tourism models and investing in village-based initiatives that prioritize environmental responsibility and inclusivity. This strategy not only ensures long-term economic returns but also preserves local culture and ecosystems. Airlangga also reaffirmed Indonesia’s dedication to international cooperation, advocating for mutually beneficial partnerships that enhance global resilience and shared prosperity. He invited delegates to explore Indonesia’s rich culinary traditions and unique national products as part of a holistic tourism experience. Ultimately, the forum served as a call to action for all stakeholders to collaborate in fostering a tourism sector that drives economic growth while upholding sustainability and cultural values.
